Karen Greenslade’s practice reflects on the natural environment and our relationships with it.
She considers the New Zealand natural environment within a context of places loved and home – often employing imagery that expresses personal memories of place and times with family, friends and domestic living.
Her response to the environment is not to represent but rather it is to abstract elements of native flora, landscapes and domestic imagery creating gentle reminders of what has been, what remains now, and that which we should endeavor to conserve alongside references to the complexities of these conservation issues.
Greenslade works in mixed media and often uses handmade dyes and inks, paint, relief prints, handmade paper and charcoal, printmaking and collage and found objects. The work is a gentle reminder of the complexities of our attitudes to our natural environments, and the interactions within the landscapes we revere but continue to subdue.
